Environmental Impacts of Military Aviation

aircraft-500Here’s an interesting paper that might help planners who are writing about indirect impacts or cumulative impacts for military aviation projects.  This paper examines trends in the environmental impact of military aviation between 1960 and 2000.  It focuses on noise, air quality and climate impacts. Three trends that are discussed in the paper are:

  1. A decrease in total fossil fuels consumed;
  2. A decrease in negative air quality and noise impacts as a result of base closures; and
  3. An increase in expected noise and air quality concerns from the public due to urbanization, increased attention, and longer range weapon systems.
